If someone told Blake he’d go from unemployed to an award-winning employee within 12 months, he wouldn’t have believed them. But that’s exactly where he’s found himself, having recently received an award for excellent customer service at Bunnings.
“I never thought I’d get a job like this, and now look where I am,” says Blake.
“I’m proud of what I have achieved and how far I have come in such a short time. The Customer Services award just proves to me what I can achieve.”
The entire Bunnings team were in attendance at Blake’s award ceremony, and were proud to see him achieve the milestone so early in his employment.
“Blake is part of the family now, and we are all very proud of him,” says Blake’s manager, Greg Jones.
But getting to this point has been no walk in the park for Blake.
“When Blake and I first met, he was a quiet and withdrawn young man who didn’t believe he would ever be able to find and keep a job,” says EPIC Transition Specialist Alyson.
“Communication wasn’t always his strong point, so it’s been fantastic to see the changes in Blake’s confidence since starting his work experience to now being employed.”
Alyson loves hearing how Blake is thriving, and knows he has a bright future ahead of him.
“I always receive great feedback from Blake’s team members on how much he has improved his communication and social skills,” says Alyson.
“I am looking forward to watching his career continue to progress in the future.”
Blake’s advice to other people with disability is to stay strong and always believe in themselves.
“Keep trying and never give up. You can find employment just like me.”
