More and more Australians are transitioning to working from home due to COVID-19. For some people, working from home can be distracting and many find it difficult to be productive. It is important to stay resilient and motivated during this time. Implementing a few simple practices can ensure that you are working to the best of your ability during this stressful time.

Location

It is important to establish a workplace within your household. Dedicate this space just for work. This will make it easier to differentiate personal life from work life.

Comfortable space

Set up your workplace to be a comfortable and welcoming environment that you want to be in. Lots of natural light, the right chair, a stand-up desk, a quiet room or even a pot plant can make all the difference.

Get dressed

Although it is tempting to stay in pyjamas all day, getting dressed in your work attire can help you get into a productive mindset. It will also ensure you avoid embarrassment on any unexpected conference calls.

Structure

It can be easy to lose track of time or become distracted whilst at home. Making a daily schedule or a personal action plan will ensure that you stay on track and complete all your intended tasks.

Breaks

Having regular breaks and lunchtime breaks as you usually would at work is important. Giving your mind a rest and standing up from the desk goes a long way in keeping you productive and in the right mindset. To clear your mind, take your breaks outside of your office space.

Stay connected

It can get lonely working from home. Ensure you stay connected with your co-workers through video chat or phone calls. Whether you’re talking about a work-related task or just calling to check in, staying social can keep you motivated and build a sense of workplace comradery.

Being productive whilst working from home during can be a struggle, particularly in these trying times. But if you implement these suggestions you should be able to continue working at your best.
