Maintaining well-being is a cornerstone of living a fulfilling and balanced life and impacts upon both personal health and professional performance. It involves a holistic approach to caring for your physical, mental, emotional and social health, ensuring that you are equipped to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and vitality.
Employees who prioritise their well-being are more likely to handle stress effectively, stay focused on tasks, and maintain positive relationships with their colleagues. Maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues can also help to create a culture of belonging and community within our teams. These relationships result in an increased sense of satisfaction in the workplace. A healthy workforce is not only more engaged and motivated but also less prone to absenteeism and burnout.
A recent study showed that Australian workers reported the highest burnout rates in the world. An alarming 61% of Australian workers reported experiencing burnout, compared to the global average of 48%. This trend has seen burnout rates increase by 5% from 2021 to 2022. This led to burnout being attributed to 40% of employee resignations.
On a personal level, prioritising well-being means making conscious choices that support your overall health and happiness. We at EPIC like to embrace our well-being through the utilisation of several different but equally important methods in the workplace.
This Mental Health Month, we’re trying to do our part in reducing these alarming burnout rates by spreading awareness of how to manage and embrace your well-being. We asked our expert mental health services consultant about the best strategies to do so, and they came back to us with some focus points on where exactly employees can feel unfulfilled in their jobs and how to remedy it.
Self-care symphony
One key aspect of self-care in the workplace is setting boundaries. Employees need to develop clear boundaries between work and personal life to prevent burnout. Leaders can support self-care by encouraging breaks throughout the workday, promoting flexible work arrangements, and discouraging overworking to support staff in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Providing resources and support for self-care is another crucial element in the workplace.
Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity, both personally and in the workplace. It’s about taking proactive steps to ensure that you are functioning at your best, physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. By incorporating self-care practices into your daily routine and promoting a culture of well-being in the workplace, you are not only benefiting yourself but also contributing to a healthier, happier, and more productive work environment for everyone.
Remember, self-care is a journey, not a destination. It’s an ongoing process of self-discovery and self-improvement. So, take the time to prioritise your well-being, both personally and professionally, because when you take care of yourself, you can better take care of those around you.
Navigating uncertainty
This can be a challenge for many employees. In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world, many industries are characterised by constant shifts, unpredictable trends, and unforeseen challenges. Working in such an environment can be stressful and demanding, requiring individuals to develop resilience, adaptability, and effective coping mechanisms to navigate the uncertainties that come their way.
Employees benefit from clear communication about changes, opportunities for feedback, and access to resources that help them cope with uncertainty.
Employers can create a more stable work environment by:
Fostering a culture of openness.
Providing regular updates on changes.
Offering professional development opportunities that enhance employees’ skills and confidence.
Employees can better manage uncertainty in the workplace by:
Being open to change and willing to learn new skills.
Communicating clearly, openly, and effectively.
Maintaining a positive mindset, celebrate every victory no matter how small.
Seeking support from colleagues, mentors, and/or professional networks.
If both employers and employees are putting these into practice, it ends up creating a workspace where people feel less isolated, more empowered, and better equipped to tackle the uncertainties the come their way.
Workloads and wellness
Following financial stress, the second highest stressor reported in a recent survey was an overwhelming professional workload and working out of hours, followed by professional burnout. Managing high workloads effectively is a key aspect for both employees and employers to ensure productivity and well-being in the workplace. When dealing with a heavy workload, it’s crucial to have effective strategies in place to manage the workload efficiently and mitigate the potential impacts of stress and burnout.
There are a few tips that can assist employees in navigating the challenges of high workloads:
Prioritise Tasks: Sort your tasks by urgency and importance to ensure critical work is completed first.
Time Management: Break tasks down into smaller sub-tasks and allocate specific time slots for each task to enhance productivity and achieve a sense of accomplishment through task completion.
Minimise Multitasking: While this can be challenging, where possible it can be helpful to block out time and focus on one task at a time to maintain quality work and reduce stress.
Take Breaks: Regular short breaks help recharge and maintain focus throughout the day.
Self-Care: Engage in activities outside work, get enough rest, and maintain a healthy work-life balance for overall well-being.
Some strategies that leaders can employ to assist with managing high workloads includes:
Resource Allocation: Ensure equitable distribution of work among employees.
Training and Development: Provide relevant training and professional development opportunities to equip employees with the necessary skills.
Flexible Work Arrangements: Offer flexibility to support employees in managing their workload and well-being effectively.
Recognition and Appreciation: Acknowledge employees’ efforts to boost morale and motivation.
Wellness Programs: Encourage access to wellness programs and well-being initiatives to support reduced stress levels and prioritise employees’ mental and physical health.
By fostering a collaborative approach between employees and leaders, managing high workloads can be a shared responsibility aimed at creating a conducive and productive work environment for all parties involved.
Connect with your purpose
Work fulfillment is crucial to mental health as experiencing satisfaction and meaning in your work can positively impact your overall well-being. Having a sense of purpose and accomplishment in one’s job can lead to increased self-esteem, motivation, and happiness. When you feel fulfilled at work, you are more likely to experience lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.
Moreover, work fulfillment can provide a sense of structure and routine, which can be beneficial for mental health. Engaging in meaningful work can also foster a sense of belonging and connection with others, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness. Additionally, when you are satisfied with your work, you are more likely to experience a sense of control over your life, leading to improved mental resilience and coping mechanisms.
Some key ways to foster fulfillment in the workplace are as follows:
Remember your purpose: First and foremost, reconnect with the purpose behind your work. Think about your ‘Why’ – what motivates you to do the work that you do? Reflect on the meaningful difference you make in the lives of individuals every day. Remember your successes, the progress you’ve made, and the lives positively impacted by your efforts. By focusing on this, you can reignite your passion and find renewed motivation to continue your important work.
Professional development: Furthermore, it’s crucial to stay curious and continue learning. Explore new approaches, attend training sessions, and seek out professional development opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills. By staying up to date with the latest trends, best practices, and innovative strategies in the field, you can reignite your passion for the work by discovering new ways to support individuals with disabilities in their employment journey.
Develop strong relationships: Building strong relationships with your participants, colleagues, and employers can also help you maintain passion for the work you do. Take the time to listen to their stories and experiences in the workplace, understand their challenges, and celebrate their successes. By fostering a sense of empathy, connection, and collaboration, you can reignite your passion by building meaningful relationships and creating a supportive community that lifts each-other up.
